Top Four Things To Look For In A Usenet Service Provider
Here is what you want to look for in a Usenet Provider - Top 4 Things
- Binary Retention - How Long are Binary Files - Video, Pictures, etc - Stored on the Server
- Quality AKA Completion - Usenet has no central server or authority - which is good in the sense the Usenet equals freedom but bad in the sense that messages on Usenet Server can vary in quality - Hence choose a quality Usenet provider
- Price - If you want the Best in quality then you will have to pay the most about $30 for Giganews - If you are more price conscious then UsenetServer at less than $8/month when you go for the Year plan is for you.
- SSL - Most providers have this option as a default but if you want to make sure what you download remains confidential then SSL is for you

- Rediscovering USENET
USENET has been around since the early 1980s. In a lot of ways, it represents the original idea behind the Internet more than the Internet of today does. This system has never gone away and still has a dedicated user base that prefers the simple and fast communication that one can engage in over the USENET compared to the Internet with all its bells and whistles. - 3 months ago
- Is USENET Worth It?
There was a time when you could get USENET access right through your ISP. Most ISPs have dropped this service and users who want to access the USENET have to subscribe to a 3rd party provider. Access to newsgroups used to be considered a basic part of Internet access. - 3 months ago
- Is USENET Too Technical for Me?
Not everyone is comfortable using new technologies. In fact, for some people, finding where they get on the Internet on their computer is still something of an accomplishment. The USENET system sometimes gets passed by because it seems very technical in some regards. - 3 months ago
Explained A Bit More
As of May 2011, Giganews the highest quality and also the most expensive Usenet service provider has binary retention levels nearing 1000 days. Other providers such as Astraweb and UsenetServer are close on their heels with binary retention in the range of 900 plus days.
To make sure you understand binary retention, this means that if someone posted a message to a Usenet newsgroup with some photos of their car for example that they would remain on the Usenet service for 1000 days.
This is pretty amazing considering that all the time the amount of data uploaded to Usenet is getting bigger and bigger as broadband speeds and specifically uploads speeds increase.
Alongside with binary retention, there is another important criterion known as binary completion. As Usenet has no central authority and no central server, which is a topic for a another hubpage but as a results, Usenet services can sometimes lose messages.
In 2011, this problem happens less and less and less but as provider reach towards the upper limits of binary retention it may occur and can be frustrating for heavy Usenet users.
Again Giganews seems to have the best reputation for quality here in terms of binary completion but their pricing is also the most expensive.
There are other criteria you should look at but the first when evaluating would be binary retention and completion.
