Usenet Customs - What Happens With No Central Authority

Most people already know about internet based discussion groups, also known as forums. Usenet has an alternative to these forums, but on Usenet the groups are often larger and many believe the discussions to be much more serious.

Also, Usenet discussion groups often last much longer than the average web based forum. Most good discussion groups on Usenet are long standing and have unwritten traditions they follow.

Because Usenet has no central regulating authority, there are no written rules. People are free to write, discuss, and publish anything they wish. There is true freedom here, even anonymity is virtually guaranteed with no threat of censorship or reprise because your identity was revealed.

So, you are quite likely find and see things that anger or offend you. For these times it is best to ignore such material. That's the beauty of this system. You, like the offending poster, can or may post something that someone else finds offending. You could argue with the person, depending on the subject matter this is welcome if the criticisms are constructive or contribute opposing views.

But this will do no good to get offending material removed. Because there is no central authority for governance and censorship there is no one to complain to. This is why it is best to just ignore any material you find as offensive. As I pointed out before, many groups have unwritten traditions and etiquette they follow.

Generally these are easy to determine and if you start by using the rule of “If you don't have anything nice to say, be nice and don't say anything.” There are a lot of other traditions and unwritten ruled withing the discussion groups on Usenet.

Pay close attention to the postings, they will be easily figured out. Until you do, if you follow the “have nothing good” rule you will be fine. Other members will give you a gentle nudge if they see it necessary. In the meantime, enjoy the completely uncensored freedom knowing that you are so anonymous you aren't even a face in the crowd.

  • Rediscovering USENET

USENET has been around since the early 1980s. In a lot of ways, it represents the original idea behind the Internet more than the Internet of today does. This system has never gone away and still has a dedicated user base that prefers the simple and fast communication that one can engage in over the USENET compared to the Internet with all its bells and whistles. - 3 months ago

  • Is USENET Worth It?

There was a time when you could get USENET access right through your ISP. Most ISPs have dropped this service and users who want to access the USENET have to subscribe to a 3rd party provider. Access to newsgroups used to be considered a basic part of Internet access. - 3 months ago

  • USENET for the Political Season

If you like keeping up with politics, USENET is a great place to be. Some people love a debate and, coincidentally, a lot of those same people seem to love the USENET system. The USENET system has some distinct advantages compared to Internet forums that you might want to consider if you're into politics and if you're following the presidential elections in the US this year in particular. - 3 months ago
