Have The Newzbin Blues - Here Are Some Very Good Replacements

By

With the decision of the British Judge that Newzbin and Newzbin2 be blacklisted from the British Telecom search index, The current users are downloading like mad and looking for alternate ways to get access to their search site. While it will still be possible to get to the Newzbin website, the difficulty in the process may prove to be more daunting than some of the less technical minded wish to deal with. Well, while I could write simplified versions of how to get around the BT blacklist, I won't...it just isn't right to tell people how to get themselves into trouble. What I will do in this Hub though, is give All my British readers, (and anyone else who cares about their individual freedoms) excellent alternatives to help their Newzbin addictions. Here are 5 of the best I know of.

NZBMatrix

One of the best and most popular indexing sites. The search is a modified forum search tool so is comprehensive, and archives can be searched for as far back as 1000 days. Membership is free for all, but they do have a VIP membership that costs $10 (6.95 EU) that will give you a lot of extra features. I have yet to catch them down, (they are up most all of the time,) and they have a forum for support that has a lot of experienced users that are happy to help you get what you need

Merlin's Portal

Another excellent and popular search. They went off line back in October 2010, but are back and eager to go. Presently the forum is being rebuilt, but the support there is great. The engine will search 750 days of binary, and has a feature similar to Watchdog. Their site is totally free, although they will accept any donations you care to send them. The forum community is quite friendly and helpful. They do experience down-times occasionally, but for the most part they stay up. And when it's good...it's great.

NGIndex

NGI will give you 800 days of archival search, and although their service isn't free, it only costs $1.39, (just short of 1 EU at today's rate.) They boast that in their index you will find over 1200 newsgroups to browse and search, more than 1 million images, and more than 1.5 million .nfo's. There are options to browse using thumbnails, or full size images, and once you find the .nfo you want all you have to do is click on it to download it.

NZBsRus

Another excellent service that offer freebie access, but there is a lifetime VIP account you can purchase for a mere $10, (6.95 EU.) Although the freebie access is ad supported, and limits you to 5 complete downloads per day, these guys have an IRC channel. And, you can search over 600 days of binary by subject, or content. There are a few tricks to their site though, like having to hit the browse button for a search. They have no advanced search options, but there are categories. They also have an RSS feed to notify you of any new NZB files uploaded.

NZB Club

A free service that has one of the best search engines going today. You can search over 700 days using their classic search or the browse option. With their automatic system of indexing the NZB files, and a special algorithm, the searches will return you results that you are looking for. No more browsing through pages and pages of search results to find exactly what you are looking for. Their search engine also has a filter to take out the adult newsgroups from your results. Something you will want if you have children in the house.

Other Options

Sadly, due to the decision of the courts, many of you will miss Newzbin...and rightfully so. But, due to the increased demand, some of the services I have have listed here may not remain free forever. Of course, you can always try the options I mentioned at the beginning of this article...if you are willing to risk any possible legal reprisals. There are other providers available to be sure. You can look for more providers at one of the Usenet review sites, or do a Google search on "Circumventing ISP blacklists."
